Funeral Services for Paul D. Burgess, age 82, will be held on Friday, March 12, 2010, @ 7:00 p.m. from the chapel of Cookeville Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 5:00 pm until time of the service. Mr. Burgess passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was born January 17, 1928, in Putnam County, TN to the late David I. and Lela Hicks Burgess. Mr. Burgess was a member of Cookeville First Presbyterian Church and a longtime elder and deacon at Union Grove Presbyterian and First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, MO. He was a graduate of Central High School in Cookeville and served in the United States Navy from 1946-1949. He earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture in 1950 from Tennessee Technological University, a master’s degree in extension education in 1962 from the University of Missouri, and a PhD in adult and higher education administration in 1971 from the University of Chicago. After starting his career as an assistant county agent with the University of Missouri Extension Services in Gasconade County, he eventually went on to serve as an assistant director of Cooperative Extension. Mr. Burgess retired from the university in 1982 as professor emeritus and moved home to Cookeville, where he and his wife happily spent the rest of his life. He was an avid farmer, gardener, whittler, hunter, fisherman and former president of the Upper Cumberland Beagle Club. His family includes his wife Anna Lois Milligan Burgess who he married on April 18, 1948, three daughters: Anna Paulette Farnham & husband Duane of White House, Debora Burgess of St. Louis, MO, Karen Burger and husband Jim of Columbia, MO, and a son Mark Burgess & wife Amy of Maryville. Two sisters: Martha Pearl Cobb of Maryville, & Bettie Sue Presley of Algood. Two brothers: Ted Burgess of Silver Point, & Fred Burgess of Trafalgar, Ind. Eight Grandchildren: D.J. Farnham, Tammy Scheel, Michael, Bryan & Stephanie Burger, Brandon, Katie, & Avery Burgess. Four Great-Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter: Carol Jean Burgess & a brother Roy Burgess. Rev. Mike Smathers will officiate at the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Cookeville or Creative Compassion.
